Helping Jewish Subreddits: Moderators, Reddit + ADL Address Rise in Antisemitism
[link removed]
The moderators of Jewish communities (aka subreddits) on the Reddit online platform were struggling to cope with antisemitism targeting their communities...
These ‘safe spaces’ for Jews to discuss their experiences are vital, especially with increased antisemitism since 10/7. But these communities felt less safe for the participants and the moderators. For example, in a subreddit where people talked about their trauma dealing with antisemitism, bad actors looked for opportunities to harass users and spread hate. Moderators of Jewish Reddit communities not only had to manage this wave of antisemitism, they faced steady and targeted harassment as well.
So, when a group of Jewish moderators reached out to the ADL Center for Technology and Society for support, we engaged with Reddit and helped lead the platform to take a number of important steps to stem instances of antisemitism and to support moderators.

“We are not just the same name”: ADL’s Jonathan Greenblatt wrote this moving essay about 10/7, about family, and about connections. Here’s an excerpt:
It’s not often that you wake up to the news of your own death. And yet, when I opened my phone earlier this morning, I had several messages from friends wondering if I was OK, if I knew this person, if I had any idea. Earlier this week, a Hamas attack on Israeli soldiers in Rafah had mortally wounded a young member of the Shaked Battalion of the Givati Brigade. The 21-year soldier who died yesterday was named Yonatan Ahron Greenblatt. It hit me like a punch in the face.

‘Jewish Problem’ Conference in Kentucky: The ADL Center on Extremism digs into the “JP” (or Jewish Problem) Conference, which hosted an unlikely gathering of white supremacists and far-right extremists, as well as Black nationalists and other antisemites — united by their shared hatred of Jews. The blatantly antisemitic focus was unprecedented and highlights the dangerous rise of antisemitism. Read more about

“Not Really a Reformist...”: In the Islamic Republic of Iran’s recent presidential elections, Masoud Pezeshkian emerged as the winner. He has been tagged by some as a “reformist,” but many Iran watchers warn against being fooled by this political label. Statements by Pezeshkian and his inner circle show that Tehran’s support for terror groups targeting Israel and Jews worldwide will likely continue unabated.

a federal judge is ordering the University to work with the students to find ways to give Jewish students equal access to the campus during any upcoming protests. After a series of anti-Israel encampments led to confrontations, vandalism, access failures and more, the school’s leadership says it is committed to creating a safe and inclusive campus for all while simultaneously strengthening their protection of Jewish students from the antisemitism that has become pervasive on campus.

Tell University Leaders to Act Now to Prevent Antisemitism on Campus. Last semester, antisemitic protesters disrupted campuses and interfered with the rights of Jewish students. ADL and our partners across the Jewish community have put together a comprehensive agenda for university leadership, with practical ways to make this coming school year safer and more inclusive for Jewish students, and for all students. Click here to select a school and email their leaders to tell them to do better for their students.

@JGreenblattADL
Since Tuesday night, I’ve watched CNN eulogize arch-terrorist Ismail Haniyeh as a “moderating force” and a “political leader.” The New York Times called him “relatively pragmatic.” Washington Post called him “one of the moderate figures” within Hamas. Give me a break. Let‘s be clear: Haniyeh was a mass murderer who authorized and celebrated the unspeakable savagery of 10/7.

@FranceskAlbs has a long record of bias as evidenced by her promotion of antisemitic conspiracy theories and the use of hateful and violent language to attack the Jewish State of @Israel. We’re joining the J7 in calling on the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to initiate the process of her removal as UN Special Rapporteur.

For months, @ADL has been disturbed by the lack of local action on this harassment of the highest-ranking Jewish official in the Executive Branch. We have been working on this doggedly with local and state law enforcement. So glad that @GovernorVA has finally taken action against this ongoing harassment.

Targeting Jewish institutions and homes with graffiti won’t bring peace in the Middle East. Instead, the vandalism in Squirrel Hill threatens a community still healing from the deadliest antisemitic attack in U.S. history.

Bigotry knows no bounds. ICYMI @arippnyc’s account of his assault in Central Park highlights a scary reality: antisemitic assaults can happen anywhere, to anyone, at any time, regardless of whether they’re Jewish or not. He was attacked because of his Jewish identity, but hatred ultimately threatens all of us.
