For too long, Supreme Court justices have been accepting substantial, unreported gifts from the rich and powerful — and they’ve been getting away with it.

Justice Clarence Thomas is the number one culprit. Thomas reportedly accepted millions of dollars’ worth of gifts over the past two decades! He’s been chauffeured around on billionaires’ private jets, taken lavish vacations aboard their yachts, and sat in their private suites at sporting events — all while he does their bidding on the bench.

But this isn’t the only time Clarence Thomas has been caught cozying up to billionaires who have business before the Court. In 2018, Thomas arrived on a private jet to attend an expensive dinner with Big Oil billionaire Charles Koch, his late brother David, and their network of wealthy right-wing donors at the Koch network’s annual winter donor summit.

This was right as the Supreme Court prepared to hear a pivotal anti-environmental case backed by the Koch network — one that would ultimately decide in their favor, overturn the Chevron doctrine, and upend the bedrock precedent behind decades of environmental protections.

This kind of blatant corruption is eroding the integrity of our judicial system and our democracy.

But there’s hope. Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Jamie Raskin are fighting back with legislation to ban these outrageous gifts and set strict limits. This is a crucial step to holding Supreme Court justices to the same ethical standards as other federal officials and restoring integrity. But we need more voices to join the fight, and we need them now.
