We’ve reached the height of summer, and for many Americans that means beating the heat on long road trips by blasting the AC. But for thousands of farmed animals, road trips are tortuous experiences resulting in being stuck in overcrowded trailers for days on end, sometimes without even so much as a water break.
In Animal Outlook’s 2021 investigation, we showed you the reality of what animals face when being transported across the country. Our investigators followed a truck transporting pigs across several states as the temperatures soared to over 91 degrees. In the heat of summer, exhaustion, dehydration, heat stress, cardiac arrest, and sudden death are common among the animals being transported. Nearly 726,000 pigs and 29,000 cows die in transport every year in the U.S. alone.
Despite a law that prohibits transporting animals for more than 28 consecutive hours without unloading them for at least five hours of rest and providing water and food, our investigators followed this truck for nearly 32 hours. At no point did our investigators witness the animals being given a rest break, food, or water. Illegal transports like these lead to increased stress, suffering, and death for thousands of animals every year. Going vegan and leaving animals off your plate is the absolute best way to ensure you're not part of this unnatural and cruel system.
Even in instances where laws are put in place to protect animals, there is no guarantee that those laws are followed. That’s why when you support Animal Outlook, you support an organization that is focused on compelling authorities to enforce animal protection laws and holding corporations accountable for the cruelty they commit. Your gift makes a direct impact on thousands of animals like the ones suffering from endless hours on transport trucks in the summer heat.
Will you join us today in ensuring that the laws written to protect animals are enforced?
