Six from SiX brings you monthly updates highlighting the power of state legislators in deep collaboration with their communities and resources to support you in this work.

** NEW: SiX National Conference Speakers Announced
------------------------------------------------------------

SiX is thrilled to share a sneak peek of our national conference speakers!

[link removed]

This year’s conference theme is Irresistible Futures: Moving from Impossible to Inevitable. On December 11-13, 2024, hundreds of state legislators and trusted partners from around the country will gather in Atlanta, Georgia to reflect and plan for a future where all people have power and agency over their lives.

Register today ([link removed]) and join the largest post-election gathering of state legislators and partners!

** Connect In-Person with SiX in August
------------------------------------------------------------

The SiX team will be at the National Organization of Black Elected Legislative Women ([link removed]) (NOBEL Women) and National Conference of State Legislators ([link removed]) (NCSL) this month and would love to connect!

On August 4-11, SiX will join NOBEL Women for their 39th Annual Legislative Conference and offer perspectives on Black maternal health, democracy, and economic justice.

August 6, SiX and National Women’s Law Center will be co-hosting a reception at NCSL to celebrate gender justice in the states and the newly launched State Gender Policy Collective ([link removed]) . Click here ([link removed]) to RSVP.

** Legislators Discuss Agriculture and Food Systems with Local Communities
------------------------------------------------------------

In late June, midwestern lawmakers visited Nebraska ([link removed]) , where they saw the devastating impacts of corporate factory farms on local communities and heard from community members on how their lives have been negatively impacted by these operations. Legislators also met farmers who are focused on improving soil health and driving a regional food economy through regenerative practices.

Earlier in July, coastal legislators traveled to Washington ([link removed]) state to explore how industrial aquaculture threatens tribal communities, local fisheries, and food sovereignty. These collaborative, immersion experiences are crucial for fostering relationships, where legislators and impacted communities work together to ensure a future where everyone has fair and equitable access to healthy food without compromising our local communities and environment.

** Direct Pay Training for State Policymakers and Advocates

------------------------------------------------------------

Direct pay creates an unprecedented opportunity to improve health, decrease energy costs, create jobs, and build wealth in low-income communities and communities of color. Check out SiX’s legislator guide ([link removed]) to building jobs and sustainable public energy and our stakeholder webinar ([link removed]) , as well as our recent Economic Power Project blog ([link removed]) on tackling the climate crisis by challenging corporate power. To learn more, join our partners at the Center for Policy & Budget Priorities on August 13 to learn how you can increase uptake of direct pay in your state. Register here ([link removed]) .

** SiX Joins the Fight to Combat Global Extremism

------------------------------------------------------------

SiX knows that the fight against global extremism has no borders. In July, SiX, along with our partners at the Women's Equality Center, sent a letter to the President and Congress of the Dominican Republic to express our concern about a bill for a new criminal code ([link removed]) that would keep in place the country’s total abortion ban, which violates the human rights of Dominicans. This letter builds on the state legislator delegation from 2023 ([link removed]) in which five state legislators from New York, North Carolina, and Arizona traveled to the Dominican Republic to learn more about the Green Wave Movement. The Dominican Republic’s total ban on abortion not only affects women, but is also devastating to their families and to society in general.

** New Report: Preempting Progress
------------------------------------------------------------

Corporations are abusing preemption in a wide range of issue areas to further enrich themselves. It’s one of the many ways anti-democratic forces continue to concentrate their power by making it harder for people to participate in our democracy. SiX’s state directors continue to work across the country with state legislators and partners like Local Solutions Support Center (LSSC) to defend local freedoms. LSSC's new 2024 Legislative Session Overview ([link removed]) takes a look at the trends from this year’s session – including how corporations are abusing preemption to make it difficult for communities and families to thrive, for kids to attend safe and nurturing schools, and for historically disenfranchised communities to participate in democracy.

State legislators, if you’d like to go deeper into SiX’s issue areas, join our legislator cohorts: the Economic Power Project ([link removed]) , the Cohort for Rural Opportunity and Prosperity ([link removed]) , and the Reproductive Freedom Leadership Council ([link removed]) !
