A year ago, Elon Musk sued CCDH for the “crime” of quantifying the tidal wave of hate and lies his policies had unleashed. The total cost to us of even fighting the case would be hundreds of thousands of dollars.

I guess we could have held up our hands in surrender and begged for mercy, but we recognized we have a duty to ensure that this billionaire bully doesn’t interfere with our mission to make the internet safer for all.

At the time, Musk was the richest man on Earth, and for a nonprofit like us, we knew we would need all the support we could get.

It was David vs Goliath. Musk had decided to use his unlimited power and money to silence an organization dedicated to safeguarding human rights and civil liberties.

But it struck me that it could also be an opportunity. How often does an organization like ours get the chance to expose and beat in court a narcissistic, thin-skinned billionaire who thinks he can intimidate his critics?

You’ve been through all of it with us. I wanted to personally thank you for your unwavering support.

Working with our amazing attorney, Roberta Kaplan, and her team, we developed a robust legal defense to shatter Musk’s meritless lawsuit.

And in March, a judge in California saw through Musk’s bullying tactics and dismissed the case. It was a seismic win for independent researchers all over the world.

Can you imagine what would have happened if Musk had won the case?

He would feel empowered to carry on suing independent researchers - a Get Out of Jail Free Card to continue turning his platform into a hellscape of hate and disinformation.

Other social media bosses would follow Elon’s example.

Social media companies and their bosses would keep disregarding people's safety in exchange for advertising dollars.

Unable to admit defeat, Musk has appealed the judge’s decision. We won the first round, but we will need to go back to the ring for one last round.
