Dear Friends,

It is crucial that we address malicious foreign interference (cyber attacks, the viral spread of false information, etc.). At a time when certain authoritarian countries are trying to destabilise democracies by manipulating information, Reporters Without Borders (RSF), calls upon the European Union (EU) to take action by adopting five key measures to strengthen its ability to combat such interference.

Democracies must be both effective and exemplary in the fight against disinformation and propaganda. They must recognise that malicious foreign interference exists, expose it, and counter it, whilst avoiding using the same authoritarian means as their adversary.

RSF is calling for an ambitious programme to counter foreign interference. This is all the more important as most citizens are unaware of the threat posed by certain foreign actors. The EU must give priority to promoting and supporting reliable and independent journalism, an effective antidote that can expose and demystify these destabilisation campaigns.

Our action is necessary to enable public access to well-sourced, verified, pluralist and independent information. And, your generosity means that our actions increase in impact every day. Thank you for your continued support.
