It’s a busy summer season helping wild animals
Hello John,
It’s summer holiday season but, here at Born Free, we haven’t stopped working for wild animals in need! There is much to tell you this month, and many ways you can get involved.
Could we save General the wild lion, found in Kenya with a deadly snare around his neck? What’s the latest on the horrendous UK badger cull? And we are thrilled to announce Dame Virginia McKenna will be attending a very special event in September…
SNARED LION RESCUE
A tour guide in Meru National Park in Kenya spotted a lion caught in a wire snare. It was General, the seven-year-old leader of Elsa’s Pride, our adopted family of wild lions.
Illegal snares, set to trap wildlife, can be lethal. They cause appalling injuries and slow painful deaths. It was a race against time. Could we save General?

KILL THE CULL
A new study shows what we’ve said all along. There’s no good evidence that killing badgers stops cattle getting TB. Yet, since 2013, over 230K have been culled. Help persuade the Government to end the cruel cull now – join us in London on 3rd September.
PROTEST WITH US
STOP SELFISH SELFIES
Some 4,000 of you have already signed our pledge to never take a photo with a cruel animal ‘photo prop’. Please tell us if you witness such exploitation this summer by Raising the Red Flag and ask your family and friends to take the pledge.

EDUCATION
& ENRICHMENT
Hailu Dagnachew from our Ethiopia team has received a degree in Vet Science. Huge news – our centre looks after 150+ rescued animals, from lions to tortoises. But, how DO we give enriched care to such a wide range?

CONDITIONS
Prompted by Born Free’s own investigations, South Lakes Safari Zoo in Cumbria has been inspected by its local council again – but has been allowed to remain open, despite appalling conditions and the ‘grave concerns’ of inspectors.
OUR REACTION
Farewell, dear Louga
We’re heartbroken to have said goodbye to our rescued lion, at our sanctuary in South Africa, after a short illness. Louga spent a decade in a circus but, thanks to your donations, was rehomed and his life transformed.

Walk on the Wild Side
Can you take 23,000 steps in August, one for every lion left in the wild? It’s your last chance to sign up to our grrrrrrrreat summer walking challenge. Together, let’s raise vital funds to protect and care for lions.
