According to research conducted by InSight Crime, illegally logged wood is one of the fastest-growing criminal markets in Mexico, especially in Chihuahua – where rival DTOs are fighting to control the sector.
InSight Crime also reported that forested regions are especially vulnerable to the threat of organized crime and violence.
"Organized crime is always more agile and flexible than governments themselves," Jeremy McDermott, co-director and co-founder of InSight Crime, a study center on Latin American organized crime, tells BBC World.
