Friends,

The past month has been a unique, challenging, and often uncertain one. From our homes, we have watched the world change irrevocably.

During that time, our work has been even more important—the religious right has ignorantly put public safety at risk, and they continue to seek sweetheart deals in each COVID-19 relief package.

We continue to fight those dangerous, unconstitutional efforts in partnership with our 19 member organizations. We are deeply proud to fight alongside each and every one of them, including Black Nonbelievers, who we are highlighting this month.

Black Nonbelievers, a member of SCA since 2015, provides support for and increases awareness of Blacks who are nonbelievers in the face of a still highly religious Black community.

Headquartered in Atlanta, the organization coordinates with affiliate chapters across the nation to ensure their members have spaces to socialize and discuss secular topics and opportunities to make their voices heard.

About to hit a major milestone, Black Nonbelievers is working on their 10th anniversary celebration in 2021.

They complement their work in communities around the country with a robust online presence, including their ongoing social media campaign, #BNchangeslives, which features testimonies from members and allies about their journeys to nonbelief and their experiences with the organization.

Along with their ongoing efforts to grow and support the Black secular community, Black Nonbelievers also leads the fight to make sure their members are seen and heard as a part of the Black community. Over time, they have built critical community partnerships, including with the Smithsonian Museum for African American Culture, that reinforce the value of secular Black voices in the Black community and in American society as a whole.

Black Nonbelievers are also a fierce presence on Capitol Hill and a critical part of our Coalition's ongoing effort to protect secular government at the state and local level.

“The working relationships between the secular organizations and the representation on Capitol Hill are vital to our movement," shares Mandisa Thomas, the founder and President of the organization. "Black Nonbelievers is able to expand our network and community reach through membership in the SCA, and we are also able to inform our members of the important work that is done through their organization.”
