Earlier this year, I started the “Dear Girl” project, and I am so excited to share more about it with you.
In August, I will have been a member of the State House for nine years. When I first came into the House, Pennsylvania was ranked towards the bottom nationally in terms of representation. But in this current session — in which I’ve been so honored to become the first woman speaker — we have the largest number of women ever serving on both sides of the aisle.
During my formative years as a child and young adult, I didn’t see young Black women leading in politics. People do not appreciate or acknowledge enough how hard women are working, where we’re leading, and where we’re serving. I’m an auntie and a godmother, and I want them to see that they can serve, they can play a role in public government, they can be leaders.
I am so proud of the “Dear Girl” project that honors women who are on the front lines, standing together, fighting for women of all colors.
