Dear Reader,

Every once in a while, someone submits a debut essay and you know that you’ve found a star.

One such star is Paul Kingsnorth, and “The Cross and the Machine ([link removed]) ” was that essay, becoming the most popular FIRST THINGS piece of 2021 and one of our most popular of all time.

Paul Kingsnorth is an English writer living in the west of Ireland. He is the author of nine books of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry, including the novel The Wake ([link removed]) , which was longlisted for the Man Booker Prize.

The story of his unexpected conversion to Eastern Orthodox Christianity in 2021 was published in FIRST THINGS as “The Cross and the Machine ([link removed]) .” He returned to the pages of FIRST THINGS in 2023 with the publication of “A Wild Christianity ([link removed]) .” His forthcoming book Against the Machine explores the cultural and spiritual impacts of the rising religion of technology.

I hope to see you there!

Yours,
R. R. Reno
