Dear John,
Here's the truth: Wrongful convictions are a symptom of a broken criminal legal system. At the Innocence Project, we're working to fix that.
Since 1992, we've freed over 251 innocent people from prison. Here's a look at some of the staggering numbers we've collected over the years:
3,942 years clients collectively spent wrongfully incarcerated. 251 innocence people freed or exonerated to date. 203 clients exonerated by DNA. 27 years is the average age when wrongfully convicted. 44 years is the average age when exonerated. 74 exonerees (estimated) have not received compensation for their wrongful convictions. 14 states do not have a compensation law at all.

Our work is crucial, John. We're not just saving lives, we're actively working to transform the systems that are carrying out these injustices. But our work would not be possible without people like you tirelessly advocating on behalf of wrongfully incarcerated individuals, generating momentum on social media through word of mouth, and donating to our mission. And right now, we're still 64 short of our 200 donor goal.
So please, can we count on you to help us free the innocent, prevent wrongful convictions, and create fair, compassionate, and equitable systems of justice for everyone?

Through our work over the years, we've identified basic patterns and common reasons for wrongful conviction, from false confessions, to eyewitness misidentification, to unreliable informants, to the misapplication of forensic science.
That's how innocent people like our clients have ended up spending decades of their lives behind bars for crimes that they did not commit.
We're committed to stopping these injustices. But freeing innocent people and transforming the criminal legal system requires resources. And that's why we're counting on you to give before our end-of-month goal.
John: Will you help us close the gap on our 200-new-donor goal and support our work to strengthen and advance the innocence movement?

With your support, we can do even more to help bring innocent people home.
Thank you,
— The Innocence Project Team

The Innocence Project works to free the innocent, prevent wrongful convictions, and create fair, compassionate, and equitable systems of justice for everyone. Founded in 1992 by Barry C. Scheck and Peter J. Neufeld at the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law at Yeshiva University, the organization is now an independent nonprofit. Our work is guided by science and grounded in anti-racism.
