John,
For 12 straight months, from July 2023 through June 2024, the Earth experienced its hottest monthly average global temperatures on record. This is now the hottest 12-month period ever.
Then July 22, 2024 turned out to be the hottest day in recorded history. This record did not last long, though: the very next day, July 23, 2024, surpassed it.
Coal and other fossil fuels, when burned, release carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide into the atmosphere. These chemicals act like a blanket on the earth, trapping the sun’s enormous heat. When we take carbon out of the earth, it accumulates in the atmosphere, and the earth’s temperatures continue to rise.
Now, a new bill introduced by Senators Joe Manchin and John Barrasso will make matters much worse. The Energy Permitting Reform Act of 2024 is a fossil fuel industry wish list taken straight from the pages of Project 2025.
Instead of reducing our fossil fuel dependency, this bill will make it easier and faster to obtain permits for fossil fuel projects and will curtail public input on these decisions.
Stop Joe Manchin’s fossil fuel giveaway. Demand that Congress reject the Energy Permitting Reform Act and instead prioritize renewable sources of clean energy.
Generations to come will depend on choices we make today - - and it’s not just human beings who are at risk from global warming. We could be spearheading the hugest mass extinction on Earth ever. This responsibility is far too big to ignore.
We can’t continue taking carbon out of the ground. Instead, we must find better means to power our lives. When fossil fuels are used up, we will need to develop alternative technologies anyway. Why not invest in renewable energy now, before we destroy the planet any further than we already have?
More than 360 environmental groups, representing millions of people, oppose the Manchin fossil fuel giveaway, including the Center for Biological Diversity, the Sierra Club, and EarthJustice. These hundreds of groups sent a letter to senators, indicating their objections. According to the letter, this bill:
-
Guts bedrock environmental protections
-
Endangers public health
-
Opens tens of millions of acres of public lands to oil & gas leasing
-
Opens hundreds of millions of acres of offshore waters
-
Gives public lands to mining companies
-
Rubber stamps projects that harm communities and worsen the climate crisis.
Instead of supporting “Dirty Deal” bills like this, we should expand “Green New Deal” legislation such as the Clean Electricity and Transmission Act and the Environmental Justice for All Act.
Tell Congress to reject Manchin’s fossil fuel giveaway!
Thank you for encouraging the development of renewable sources of energy!
