Ten years after the water poisoning disaster in Flint, Michigan, catapulted the lead pipe crisis into the public eye, America still struggles with lead poisoning. Overly lenient EPA rules have allowed this crisis to fester for far too long, at great human cost to America’s poorest and most neglected communities.
Even a little bit of lead poisoning from old pipes can cause irreversible brain damage to children, along with learning disabilities and impaired hearing. In adults, it can cause kidney damage, infertility, cardiovascular disease, and even miscarriages in addition to brain damage.
As many as 22 million people in the U.S. have to drink water that passes through lead pipes, and Black communities are hit the hardest thanks to decades of environmental racism. It’s long past time for the EPA to update its rules, and that’s why Earthjustice is leading the charge to secure the strongest possible lead pipe rules and end this crisis for good.

Thankfully, an opportunity to make a huge difference is at hand. The EPA is going to issue its final rules for lead and copper piping in the fall, and Earthjustice is marshaling a public campaign to let the EPA know that the American people are ready for big changes.
The EPA needs to make sure utilities pay to replace all their pipes, that the replacement pipes are made from recycled copper and not PVC, and that cities don’t get long timelines to kick the issue down the road with — for instance, current rules give cities like Chicago FORTY years to replace all their pipes. That’s obviously not fast enough.
In the meantime, we need to have water filters installed in public schools with lead pipe infrastructure to make sure kids aren’t being exposed to lead at school.
The latest surveys show that over half a million kids in America suffer from lead poisoning.
