Hello,
In 2021, there were approximately 136 million hospital emergency department (ED) visits. Roughly half of those visits happened after standard business hours. When outpatient facilities, such as urgent care clinics or physician offices, are likely to be closed, hospitals remain open.
The Coalition to Strengthen America’s Healthcare partnered with KNG Health Consulting, an independent health economics and policy consulting firm, on new research showing why life-saving, 24/7 access to hospital care is so important:
- Nearly half (49%) of all injury and trauma visits and two-thirds of overdose- and poisoning-related ED visits occur after business hours. Each minute counts during trauma-related ED visits.
- Children constituted 21% of all ED visits; 55% or 15.3 million children’s ED visits occurred after standard business hours. Parents know when their sick children can’t wait for the next available appointment.
- In 2021,18.1 million (13%) ED visits occurred in rural areas, where people are more likely to have limited access to other sites of care.
Our elected officials need to know just how much Americans rely on 24/7 access to care, and the need to keep this care funded. Share this new data using our social toolkit – a package of pre-made posts for X (Twitter), Facebook and LinkedIn.
When children are really sick, they can’t afford to wait for the next available appointment.
In 2021, more than 15 million children’s emergency department visits occurred after standard business hours. Hospital emergency departments are there for around-the-clock pediatric emergencies.
Strengthen 24/7 access to care to ensure American children are protected.
