Hi there,

My name is Nia Bentall, and I’m the mobilization lead here at Vote Forward. My work involves a lot of communication and interaction with our volunteer letter writer community, so if you’ve ever joined one of our national letter writing parties, you’ve probably seen me on Zoom!

When volunteers ask what they should write in their letters, I always encourage them to go through our [personal storytelling training]([link removed]). When we first launched this training a few years ago, I did it myself and found it to be immensely helpful in fine-tuning my own message for my letters:

“I vote because I want myself and all of us to be able to make our own decisions about whether or when to start a family without interference from politicians. I saw the difference it made in real people's lives when representatives were elected who passed policies that supported reproductive health and rights.”

What I found most helpful about this training—and what volunteers say helps them—is that a specific, authentic story about how voting has impacted your life or your loved ones’ lives, can help you better connect with voters. It can also help you talk about issues that are affected by voting in a non-partisan way.

Each time I read stories that volunteers have written after the training I find myself more and more inspired to continue doing this work—and our research shows us that voters find them inspirational, too.
