To combat COVID-19, Florida must suspend its Certificate of Need Laws

In support of the family-owned Brewster Ambulance Service, PLF has called on Florida Governor Ron DeSantis to suspend the state’s Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity (COPCN) requirement for ambulances. That law puts the interests of incumbent providers above Florida entrepreneurs and consumers and blocks health care providers from providing vital services during the COVID-19 pandemic.

As Anastasia Boden and Mollie Williams explain, CON laws are irrational under normal circumstances, but they are particularly unreasonable during a global pandemic, when entrepreneurs in all fields need the flexibility to adapt to quickly changing conditions.

Constitutional rights and voluntary action are the keys to beating COVID-19

A recent survey conducted by The Atlantic has revealed that a majority of Americans from both sides of the political aisle now support possibly unconstitutional government action to combat the continuing spread of COVID-19.

But as Timothy Snowball writes for our friends at the Foundation for Economic Education, not only are more government dictates, force, and coercion unnecessary, they would make the country less prepared to combat the pandemic.
