Notable Quote of the Day

“Since March 17 — the last big competitive primary day and the first that really ran up against the coronavirus scare — only three states have wrapped up their presidential primaries. By contrast, nine contests are now slated for June 2, which has become a sort of unexpected mini Super Tuesday. And five primaries are now taking place after June 9, which was originally the last day for states to hold their primaries without penalty.

Given the circumstances, it wouldn’t be surprising if the Democratic National Committee decides to go easy on them, but some of these primaries are really late. Connecticut’s, for example, is now scheduled for Aug. 11, which is just a week before the Democratic National Convention (which was itself rescheduled). And according to presidential primaries expert and FiveThirtyEight contributor Josh Putnam, that would be the latest contest ever in the modern era of presidential primaries.”

Election Updates

  • Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez said on Thursday, “We expect to hold an in-person convention in Milwaukee. We are planning for that. At the same time, we do not put our public health heads in the sand. We don’t do that right now. We won’t do that in the run-up.” The convention was moved to August earlier this month.

  • Joe Biden held a virtual fundraiser on Thursday evening that raised $1.1 million. In addition to several entertainers, former 2020 presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg also appeared. During the event, Biden said he believed Donald Trump was going to attempt to delay the election.

  • Former U.S. Treasury Secretary Larry Summers is advising Biden on economic issues, Bloomberg reported. Summers, who was director of Obama’s National Economic Council in 2009 and 2010, was critical of wealth tax proposals put forward by Sens. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren during the Democratic primary.

  • The Trump campaign launched an app to gamify support and drive voter outreach. The app was originally intended to build off of Trump’s rallies and has been reworked to feature videos and virtual events.

  • During his daily press briefing on Thursday, Trump said that his administration was considering extending national social distancing guidelines to the start of the summer or later.

Flashback: April 24, 2016

The Cruz and Kasich campaigns issued statements announcing that they would each focus on different states to limit the number of delegates that Donald Trump could receive in upcoming primaries.
