Hi james,
Donald Trump’s election chances have never looked worse. He was so confident that he’d be facing off against Joe Biden with the cloud of cognitive decline in the air that he picked the ineffably creepy J.D. Vance as his running mate. Rather than someone who could attract new voters, he went with someone who would excite the MAGA base. The problem is that Vance is, to put it politely, a candidate with zero electoral value. To put it less politely, he’s a military-grade weirdo so off-putting that the entire internet is half-joking about him having sex with a couch.

Now that Kamala Harris is in the race, Trump’s campaign is in free-fall. In a shockingly short amount of time, she managed to unify the party and make massive strides with the young voters and people of color who were less than enthused about Biden. There is a palpable sense of enthusiasm about her and the polls are quickly tilting in her direction. Worst of all for Trump, there’s nothing to hit her with. The entire right-wing attack strategy was built around Biden’s age. Now, Trump is the elderly candidate and Republicans are scraping the bottom of the barrel for attacks, predictably resorting to well-honed racism and misogyny to smear Harris.
With that desperation in mind, Trump’s latest campaign stunt takes on a distinctly pathetic tint. He announced on Truth Social that he’ll be returning to Butler, Pennsylvania — the place where he survived an assassination attempt from a member of his own party — for a “BIG AND BEAUTIFUL RALLY.” Clearly, the convicted felon is missing the minor burst of sympathy that he received in the days following the gunman’s attack. The country has moved on and he hates it.

Drawing attention back to the assassination attempt also allows Trump to wallow in self-pity and victimhood. This man is never happier than when he’s whining about how unfair the world is to him. His narcissism defines him.
The decision to circle back to Butler also underlines the fundamental problem with Trump’s campaign. He has nothing to run on. Rather than contend with Kamala on the issues, he’s stooping to cheap sideshow distractions. Meanwhile, the Democrats are talking about codifying Roe, expanding healthcare, combatting climate change, and forcing the rich to pay their fair share. Unless you’ve been brainwashed into the cult of Trump, the choice here is clear.
Considering the despair-inducing state of the presidential race just a few weeks ago, this positive shift is nothing short of astonishing. There’s a tough fight ahead but we’re going to win this. If we recruit our friends to vote, amplify Democratic messaging on the core issues, and expose Trump and his fascist Project 2025 blueprint for America, we will make history and elect Kamala Harris as President of the United States of America.
Stay focused, stay energized.

PRE-ORDER “SHAMELESS”
I’ve written my first book, titled “Shameless.” The book lays bare the long con of the Republican Party, illuminating the dangers of the ever-widening gulf between the vaunted Republican brand and their actual behavior; how the media has proven itself a willful participant in this farce; and how Democrats can rebalance the political landscape. Featuring insights from Jen Psaki, Pete Buttigieg, among others, and with a foreword by Jamie Raskin, Shameless will be essential reading as we head toward November. DON'T BE A MITCH FUND
The "Don't Be A Mitch" campaign is back after a hugely successful 2022 cycle, having raised $1.2 million for voter registration groups ahead of the midterm elections. This year, with a tough Senate map, we have no room for error. I put together a list of organizations from 5 key states (Montana, Ohio, Arizona, Wisconsin, and Missouri) that I think are best situated to ensure that the Senate stays in Democrats' hands. Any amount helps!
