Now is not the time to be rushing into damaging deals
Dear John
Donald Trump is chasing a toxic trade deal with the UK that could hand huge power to big business in the USA – at the expense of people and the planet.
And he’s doing it during a pandemic.
Now is clearly not the time to rush into trade talks. With all eyes on the NHS and the immediate need to save jobs, Trump mustn’t be allowed to force through a deal that could cause the environmental and safety standards of the products in our shops to plunge.
Our co-CEOs, Miriam and Hugh, have written an open letter to the UK trade secretary Liz Truss. It urges her to formally halt trade negotiations during this crisis and commit not to restart until people are safe and talks can be properly scrutinised. The letter will be even more powerful if thousands of us add our names too.

The risks posed by a bad deal with Donald Trump are huge.
More products linked to the destruction of the Amazon rainforest could fill our shelves. We could soon be buying goods made using dangerous chemicals that are currently banned here because of the threat to human and animal health. Or eating meat pumped with unnecessary antibiotics linked to global river pollution and new, treatment-resistant infections.
The government’s priority right now must be tackling coronavirus. Which makes recent comments by our trade secretary and the US trade representative even more worrying. They want to get going quickly. Right when the rest of the country – from politicians to the public – can’t properly scrutinise what they’re doing.
So if, like me, you don’t want to see our environmental protections get trashed because we don’t have time to get trade rules right, please add your name to the letter.
I'LL SIGN THE LETTER ([link removed])
We look forward to the day when the UK can build an ambitious trade strategy that helps us deal with the climate and nature crises, as well as tackling economic uncertainty. But that can’t happen behind closed doors. And now is definitely not the time to chase a dirty trade deal.
Thank you for your support, and stay safe.
Kierra
