John,
After what’s felt like a long time coming, the Kids Online Safety Act – now called the Kids Online Safety and Privacy Act (KOSPA) – has been voted out of the Senate!
This win is historic and represents serious movement on the first substantive piece of legislation for tech accountability in decades. Senators united across the aisle, listened to parents and young people, and finally put kids’ online safety before Big Tech profits. We are grateful to the parents and organizations we’ve worked alongside to get to this moment, and especially you – the Issue One community – who have answered the call when we’ve asked you to contact your elected officials, urging them to support KOSA.
But we aren’t done. Kids’ online safety is just one part of our goal to build a healthier digital information environment that will enhance, rather than undermine our democracy. We still need your support to pressure the House to protect kids online. We’ll need your help to ensure comprehensive data privacy for all Americans. And we’ll need to work together to remove the immunity shield only big tech companies benefit from by finally addressing Section 230 of the Communications’ Decency Act.
Thank you for supporting this work – we couldn’t do it without you!
Onward,
Alix Fraser Council for Responsible Social Media Director, Issue One
