DAY 3 | April 24

VOTE

Young people want a future and they need to discover the power of their vote. President Trump has been an incredibly destructive force, and on the long list of violations is the fact that he has rolled back no less than 95 environmental regulations. Voting has never been more important. We’re holding a digital lobby day using social media and one-click tools to contact our local elected officials directly and hold them accountable to our demands for a livable future. Through these actions, we will ensure that climate justice is made a political priority on national, state, and local levels.

Join our digital teach-ins on the history of the climate movement, the impact of the climate crisis on NYC, and ways to expand your climate advocacy. Plus1Vote will host online voter registration and census outreach and we will be holding an online lobby to contact our Mayor and other elected officials directly so we can deliver our demands for a livable future. We must ACT on Climate justice at all levels!

Three Calls to Action

1. Get Counted

If you haven’t yet, today is the day to do it!

If you have, call or message an 18-year-old and make sure they have signed up to vote! Remind them of the power of their vote, and share this link.

  • Complete the 2020 Census

Be counted! Your participation in the Census ensures that your community will get the resources and representation it needs. Responses are secure and confidential, and it takes just a few minutes. Get started here.

2. Demand Passage of Renewable Rikers

Mayor de Blasio, we demand action on the Renewable Rikers Act! The three bills included in this era-defining act codify much-needed environmental and restorative justice measures, ensuring that another social atrocity will never again happen on this land. The bills also pave the way for closure of harmful peaker plants and transfer stations, whose activity can cause deadly asthma rates that are up to 3x what is seen elsewhere in the city. In addition, the wastewater treatment facility could operate on a net-zero basis, replacing up to 4 outdated facilities within miles of Rikers, and preventing billions of gallons of waste being dumped into our waters. It could eventually pay for itself—re-allocating some of the BILLIONS of dollars currently being spent to maintain our decrepit circa 1930s-1950s facilities.

3. Call on Rep. Jeffries: Support the Green New Deal

Hakeem Jeffries represents New York’s Eighth Congressional district in the heart of Brooklyn, and, as Chairman of the Democratic Caucus, is one of the most influential members of Congress. Please take this moment to sign onto this letter calling on Hakeem Jeffries to champion a Green New Deal that helps our nation recover from COVID-19 while preventing climate change, reducing air pollution, and reversing income and social inequality. Feel free to sign on as a representative of 350Brooklyn, if you are not a constituent.

Sign the letter calling on Representative Jeffries to support the Green New Deal.
