Team,
Over the weekend, the New York Times published an article laying out the
conservative-led plan to undermine access to public education and exclude
undocumented immigrants from public schools.
Here’s what’s happening:
The right wants to limit access to public education and overturn Plyler v. Doe — the landmark Supreme Court decision making it unconstitutional for a state to
deny public education to students based on their immigration status.
What the article missed:
Education is a cornerstone of civil society and a bedrock of our democracy. When
children are deprived of the opportunity to learn, grow, and pursue their
dreams, all communities suffer.
Denying education to undocumented students hurts families and would be
detrimental to the country.
NILC is taking action to stop this right-wing attack on public education:
We are defending the right to education for all students. For decades, NILC has
been deeply involved in this fight, litigating and advocating to protect
undocumented students’ right to a public education in California, Alabama and
other states.
In May of this year, we launched a national campaign, uniting a coalition of
nearly 40 organizations committed to defending education for all.
That’s where you come in, friend:
Join us as we refuse to let extremists target immigrant communities and
undermine public education. We need your support to build on this powerful
movement and protect the rights of every child to learn.
And we hope you’ll join us. By donating today, you are helping us continue to
monitor threats to education access, provide resources to local advocates, and
fight to uphold the principles of Plyler v. Doe .
