We’re working to tell the stories of those who had to choose between their safety and their right to vote. We need your help to keep going.

Hours after the Supreme Court ruled that Wisconsinites would have to choose between risking their lives and forfeiting their right to vote, thousands of voters stood in crowded lines in the midst of a deadly pandemic.

This is ridiculous. We’re working hard to tell these voters’ stories and we need your help.

Friend,

They say a picture is worth a thousand words.

When I saw this one, I knew there was a story to tell:

This is Ridiculous

So that’s exactly what the team at Demand Justice and I sought out to do.

I interviewed Jennifer Taff, the woman who held the now famous sign on Wisconsin’s Election Day as she stood in line for hours to enter her polling place. Jennifer had requested an absentee ballot, but by the night before Election Day it still had not arrived. The Republican Supreme Court justices ruled she and others across Wisconsin wouldn’t have their votes counted unless they went in person to the polls — in the middle of a deadly pandemic. Jennifer wanted to be able to vote by mail, stay safely at home, and practice advised social distancing — but the Supreme Court took away that option for her and thousands of other Wisconsinites.

The Supreme Court and its five Republican justices proved that they will choose politics over the wellbeing, health, and safety of the American people.

Unacceptable. We’re determined to keep on lifting up stories like Jennifer’s and pressuring the courts to do better, but we can’t do it without your help. Will you chip in before midnight tomorrow and help us take back the court?

Jennifer asked the Court, “what other ways are you going to play politics with the lives of American citizens?”

All of our progressive priorities rely on the courts. This term, the Supreme Court is set to release verdicts on DACA, LGBTQ+ discrimination, abortion, gun violence prevention, birth control, and access to Trump’s tax returns. During the middle of a pandemic, they’re even going out of their way to hear yet another challenge to the Affordable Care Act, which could rob millions of Americans of critical health protections.

This is BS. So much is at stake. We cannot allow our courts to become even more political. It’s time to say enough and raise our voices.

Jennifer is right: this is ridiculous. Chip in before midnight tomorrow night so we can keep on sharing her story — and amplify the voices of those who are hurt by this Supreme Court.

It was an honor to share Jennifer’s story. Together we can continue amplifying her message and making sure others’ voices are heard.

With gratitude,

Diana
