Republican mayor in Arizona's third-largest city endorses Kamala Harris
Mesa Mayor John Giles came out in support of Vice President Kamala Harris on Monday, calling in an op-ed in the Arizona Republic for his fellow conservatives to join him in backing her for president. Giles invoked the late Sen. John McCain and his motto of “Country First” in making the case for Harris, saying that Republicans have “a moral and ethical responsibility” to choose country over party come November. Hailing Harris’ candidacy as a return to political “decency,” the mayor also praised her and President Joe Biden for their work investing in the battleground state’s economy, saying the pair “are delivering thousands of new jobs to Arizonans and helping us grow critical industries.” Stand by for withering, bad-faith, personal attacks from Donald Trump and his MAGA minions. Doctors are wrestling with more than 103,000 cases of lice and scabies and 65,000 cases of skin rashes, according to the World Health Organization. In Gaza’s population of some 2.3 million, more than 1 million cases of acute respiratory infections have been recorded since the war began, along with more than half a million cases of acute diarrhea and more than 100,000 cases of jaundice, according to the United Nations Development Program.

Illegal crossings hit Biden-era low as migrants wait longer for entry

Biden issued executive actions severely restricting asylum claims at the border earlier this summer, and migrants who cross are more likely to be removed from the country expeditiously. Under the new policy, the processing of most asylum claims at the southern US border is suspended when the seven-day average of unauthorized crossings exceeds 2,500. The restriction could be suspended 14 days after the seven-day-average drops to 1,500 per day.

Far-right rioters on Monday evening broke into a military base where soldiers detained on suspicion of inserting a cattle prod into the rectum of a detained Palestinian were being held for questioning, hours after a separate IDF facility was stormed by a right-wing mob fuming over the arrests. The anarchic scenes of mass break-ins Monday, fomented by several members of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s ruling coalition, some of whom took part in the forcible entries, sparked angry condemnation from IDF chief Herzi Halevi, who said they harmed the army, Israel’s security, and the war effort. Netanyahu appealed for calm on Monday afternoon, but his words did nothing to prevent a mob outside the IDF’s Beit Lid base in central Israel from carrying out a similar break-in hours later. The protests were sparked by the arrests earlier in the day of nine Israel Defense Forces soldiers suspected of the sexually abusing and raping Palestinian detainees at the Sde Teiman military facility in southern Israel, causing an outcry among far-right politicians. The Israeli Knesset openly debated whether or not it was acceptable to rape Palestinian prisoners, with members of the ruling party Likud arguing that yes, in fact, it was. Netanyahu declared the IDF the "most moral army in the world" less than a week ago in front of the US Congress.
