Dear Friend, |
I have good news for beluga whales, sea otters, and anyone who cares about fighting climate change. |
Earlier this month, a federal district court judge ruled in our favor and suspended an offshore oil-and-gas lease sale in Alaska’s Cook Inlet pending further agency analysis. This lease sale opened nearly a million acres of federal waters to the fossil fuel industry. |
This victory could prevent decades of oil and gas drilling in Southcentral Alaska and protect critical habitat for endangered beluga whales and sea otters. Earthjustice has been fighting this lease sale since 2022, and thousands of supporters like you have submitted petitions and donations to support this work. We share this victory with you. |
In addition to endangered marine life, Cook Inlet also supports subsistence, commercial, and recreational fisheries and a multi-faceted tourist industry, fed by visitors from around the world who are drawn by the region’s unparalleled natural beauty. The inlet is essential for Alaska Native communities, who have stewarded these lands and waters for millennia. |
Alaska is the fastest-warming state in the country according to the most recent National Climate Assessment. It is experiencing more extreme consequences of climate change than the continental United States. Coastal erosion, thawing permafrost, melting sea ice, and fishery collapse are all ramifications of the worsening global climate crisis, which will only intensify with new oil and gas drilling operations. The last thing Alaskans needed is more carbon-emitting infrastructure. |
This is a victory in our fight against fossil fuels but there is still much work to be done. We are working in courtrooms across the country to transition away from climate-polluting industries and protect endangered wildlife — and we can’t do any of it without you. |
|
Thank you for your ongoing partnership. |
|
Sincerely,
Hannah Payne Foster
