The title of Poynter's upcoming training Essential Skills for Rising Newsroom Leaders is pretty self-explanatory.
It's what happens once you get here that's harder to qualify.
"People come here expecting to learn journalism skills, but they are going to take away so much more," said Poynter lead faculty Tony Elkins. "We use the context of journalism to teach the human-centered skills necessary to becoming a great leader, but it's also the experiences and support from your fellow classmates that pushes this training into a really transformative experience."
Elkins and co-lead faculty Fernanda Camarena will help you gain a better understanding of your personal leadership style, teach you how to more effectively work with managerial colleagues, explain how to better advocate for yourself and your direct reports, and work with you to develop an action plan you can immediately apply.
The in-person seminar takes place Dec. 2-6 in St. Petersburg, Florida, on the Poynter campus. It is designed for managers who might already have a few years under their belts or who are brand new to leadership.
Tuition is $1,500. Applications are due by Oct. 11.

Where ethics, journalists and AI intersect, you'll find Poynter. |
Journalists are often shut out by powerful sources. Here's help. |
Journalists are increasingly being shut out of their efforts to cover public business and hold officials accountable.
That's why Poynter convened a group of experts to engage in a discussion about this phenomenon and provide insights into what journalists can do about it.
Their key takeaways were released recently in “Shut Out: Strategies for good journalism when sources dismiss the press,” which makes the case that growing adversity from public officials toward journalists is damaging not just to the journalism industry, but detrimental to the public trust. |

journalists can connect with audiences, where our respected brand gives us access to experts from all disciplines, where we are trusted to stoke genuine conversation and meaningful
brainstorming," writes Poynter President Neil Brown. |
