Gas Leaks Could be Costing New York City Taxpayers More Than $70 Million a Year
In New York, firefighters responded to more than 22,000 uncombusted gas leaks in 2018 alone, a number that far surpasses those registered in other U.S cities, a new report by the research and policy institute PSE Healthy Energy found.
Climate experts say the findings back up the city and state's efforts to transition away from gas to fuel appliances and heat homes. In New York City, gas hookups in new construction are already banned for buildings of seven stories or less, and will apply to larger buildings starting in 2027. A statewide policy will go into effect in 2026.
