Last night, Dictator Maduro announced his self-proclaimed victory to the Venezuelan people. His speech was fueled by Christian nationalism, hateful rhetoric towards global leaders, and claims of victimhood. He also reintroduced his self-authored book on political strategies, which he calls the ‘7 Transformations Plan’.
Maduro's broadcasting of his electoral victory falsely implied he backed a fair and free election. However, the spectacle he created was calculated, making it seem as though the overcrowded venue represented a large majority of voters. In stark contrast, the streets were filled with devastated protesters banging pots and pans, shouting “Free Venezuela” and calling for action.
Maduro attacked those who campaigned for the opposition, labeling them “demons” intent on destabilizing democracy, while calling street protesters “terrorists” who threatened the nation’s safety. After 11 years in office, this latest win could mean 6 more years of human rights violations, extreme income inequality, and political violence.
