Channeling Grief into Determination

During this time of uncertainty, we at the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention wanted to share hopeful and inspiring stories from our volunteers – those in communities around the country who continue to do amazing work in the fight to #StopSuicide.

After losing her daughter Brittany to suicide in 2016, Angela Drake channeled her grief into fierce determination to help others, educating those in her South Dakota community about suicide prevention.

“When I started volunteering for AFSP, my mission was, ‘I’m going to save one kid, because I lost mine.’ One time, after presenting an AFSP education program in a high school, I was at the mall a couple days later, and this girl came up to me. She said, ‘I have to say thank you. If you hadn’t come to my school that day, I wouldn’t be here.’”
