UNITED E-News July 2024 - Minding the heat

Dear UNITED Network,

This month's E-News comes a little later than usual because it's going to be the last one before a small summer break that we're taking to recharge our batteries and strategise for the next season together.

As usual a lot has been going on and these weeks have certainly been characterised by a lot of political turmoil, with the attack to the U.S presidential candidate Donald J. Trump, Joe Biden retiring from the elections, the vote for the French Parliament, the re-election of Ursula von der Leyen and Roberta Metsola as a result of the EU Parliamentary Elections; everything with war still rampaging in Gaza and Ukraine.

In such complex times we keep our commitment in doing our best through our projects, initiatives and campaigns, monitoring what's going on and equipping people with tools and resources to deal with diverse challenges, building spaces for dialogue and growth.

Delegates at U4EU 2.0 Youth Summit 2024

This commitment is surely embodied by our Experts & Delegates, who bring our Network's voices in many important events and meeting, including those related with the projects we participate in. One of the most recent one is “U4EU 2.0: Youth Shaping Europe’s Tomorrow”. We have already talked about this amazing project that aims to take the achievements of the U4EU project to the next level by moving from collecting views to fostering tangible actions and policy engagement. For this reason we're very happy to share with you the success of the first public event, the Youth Summit on the Future of Europe , held in Athens on July 8th, UNITED for intercultural action, represented by Eszter Holly, Nguyen Thi Phuong Chi, Gergő Zsigmond and Réka Keresztes, had the great opportunity to take part in the summit as a project partner and you can discover more about the event through our website.

STOP RACISM NOT THE GAME! Campaign is officially on!

UEFA EURO 2024 has just finished, with Spain winning the cup and Summer Olympics in Paris have just started, already showing the best of sports have to offer.

Since sport is also an amazing resource and a vehicle for some of the greatest human values we all share, we're very thrilled to announce the official start of the campaign Stop Racism, not the game!
🔹Stop Racism, not the game! is a campaign born within the #Monitora project created to encourage people to report, monitor and fight racism in grassroots sports.
➡️The campaign aims at soliciting grassroots sport operators and practitioners to report racist incidents and to monitor them. It will also give sport operators the practical tools to prevent and face racism in sport.
The campaign is part of the Erasmus+ project Monitora-Monitoring racism in sport.
To discover more about the project, keep following the campaign on our social media channels and check out this link or get in touch with us.

Remembering Utøya Massacre

🫂On July 22, 2011, a right-wing extremist in Norway killed 69 people at Utøya, most of whom were young attendees at the Norwegian Labour Party Youth’s summer camp. This tragic event stands as one of Europe’s greatest examples of extremism and radicalization, carried out by a single individual.
We commemorate this day not only to remember the tragedy and the danger of white suprematism and fascist ideologies, but also to remind people that the resilience of Civil Society managed to start a healing process for the whole community in the aftermath of the horror.
Utøya has since been rebuilt as a commemoration and learning center, emphasizing both remembrance and the pursuit of a more inclusive, democratic society. Let us continue to resist hate, extremism, and discrimination by upholding human rights and dignity.
💬"You will reach further than it might feel like right now. Maybe it seems hopeless, but it is not over" - Aleksander Sandberg, Utøya Survivor

Getting Ready for a new season of projects!

In Autumn some of our biggest projects are ending, like R2COM and REFUGIN, and we're very much looking forward to share their success with you but also to dive into the new ones we'll be involved with, so don't miss your chance and let us know if you'll be interested in taking part in them.
In the menatime though we hope you can enjoy a well deserved break and recharge your activists batteries. #stayunited
