It’s been another busy week in Washington. From pressing the White House for better border security policies to demanding answers about the attempted assassination of President Trump—it was a productive week in Congress working for TX-23. Condemning Failed Border Policies As President Biden’s “Border Czar,” few are more responsible for the border crisis than Vice President Kamala Harris. On Thursday, I voted YES to condemn the Biden administration and Vice President Harris for failing to secure the U.S. border. Vice President Harris has only visited the border once, has never spoken to the current or former Border Patrol leadership, and has created serious national security issues as a result of her negligence. We have paid the price for this inaction. Passing Legislation in Congress This week, my legislation, the Improving Access to Our Courts Act, passed in Congress. This bill will expand courthouse access for West Texans by allowing federal court proceedings to formally take place in Alpine. Currently, residents of the Big Bend region, including law enforcement, must drive long distances to attend trial proceedings in the nearest federal courthouse, which is located hours away in Pecos. That travel is costly, time-consuming, and puts a strain on the public, not to mention law enforcement agencies, which have limited resources. In the coming days, this bill will be signed into law. I am proud to help deliver this win for the Big Bend area and will keep fighting to ensure our district has the resources it needs. Those who dare to do so must face the full force of the law. During Prime Minister Netanyahu’s address to Congress on Wednesday, radical pro-Palestinian activists replaced American flags with Palestinian ones, and in some cases even burned them. As a veteran, few things infuriate me more than seeing the American flag desecrated. I fought in Afghanistan and Iraq to defend our flag alongside many Americans who gave their lives to protect everything it represents. That's why I proudly support legislation for a constitutional amendment that authorizes Congress to prohibit the physical desecration of the flag, ensuring that those who disrespect it face severe consequences. Creating a New Task Force to Investigate President Trump's Assassination Attempt The American people deserve clear and honest answers about the security failures that led to the attempted assassination of President Trump. This week, every member of the U.S. House of Representatives came together and unanimously voted to create the Task Force on the Attempted Assassination of Donald Trump. This Task Force will consist of 11 members of Congress, who will rigorously investigate the actions of all parties involved with President Trump’s rally in Pennsylvania. We must understand the full scope of the security failures at President Trump’s event and ensure that something like this never happens again.
