Another Barnstorming Success at the 51st American Legislative Exchange Council Annual Meeting
The NumbersUSA State Government Relations Team is thrilled to share with our members and supporters all the exciting news from our recent trip to the 51st Annual American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) Annual Meeting in Denver, Colorado. The team had the opportunity to meet with various state representatives, senators, and other policymakers to advocate for sensible state immigration policies that prioritize the interests of U.S. workers.
The experience was fast-paced and productive. We engaged in meaningful discussions and debates with individuals who held diverse perspectives on not only immigration policy but also the role States have to play in protecting their legal workforces from the burdens of uncontrolled mass immigration. The team presented NumbersUSA’s ideas, research, and polling on how state policies like E-Verify can benefit states’ economies and security.

Our team prepared tirelessly in order to convey the message that immigration limits must be credibly enforced, harkening back to Rep. Barbara Jordan’s 1995 U.S. Commission on Immigration Reform. The connections we made and the conversations we began at the event will undoubtedly guide our future advocacy efforts as we continue to work toward enacting sensible immigration enforcement solutions.
Critical initiatives at the forefront of our advocacy efforts were mandatory E-Verify, denying in-state tuition for illegal aliens, prohibiting driver's licenses for illegal aliens, ending sanctuary policies, taxing remittances, and restricting public benefits for illegal aliens. These policies are crucial in cutting off the numerous magnets that attract and facilitate illegal immigration into states and ensuring that our nation’s laws are enforced effectively in all 50 states.

The highlight of our trip was hosting a successful workshop with our friend and collaborator, Former Acting Director of USCIS, Joseph Edlow, titled “Shutting off the Job Magnet: Mandatory E-Verify and Illegal Employment - A Legislative Primer.” In the workshop, our panel delved into the ease and effectiveness of requiring the use of E-Verify by all businesses to ensure that employers only hire legally authorized workers. Particularly emphasizing the point that E-Verify is the single most crucial thing States can do to turn off the jobs magnet, reduce illegal presence in their state, and, in doing so, create a level playing field and law-abiding job market within their state.
Our presentation was an excellent opportunity for us to share our expertise and research on immigration enforcement and address any concerns and misconceptions that policymakers may have. By having open and honest discussions, we were able to foster a better understanding of the complexities of the current immigration system and the need for common-sense reforms like mandatory E-Verify.
The legislators' response to our E-Verify Primer was overwhelmingly positive, and we were thrilled to see their eagerness to implement these policies in their respective states. But it wasn’t just legislators. Our workshop also sparked meaningful discussions on the impact of immigration policies on state economies and the workforce with other thought leaders and interested parties—including a few representatives from groups not typically known to support the goals of the millions of you who make your voices heard through NumbersUSA.
In addition, the team manned a booth at ALEC’s Exhibit Hall, where we engaged in additional discussion. These conversations were incredibly fruitful, and it was clear that our work advocating for immigration policies that protect American workers and communities is more important than ever!
The legislators, thought leaders and even their guests were engaged at the team’s booth and asked insightful questions, showing a genuine interest in finding solutions to the state issue of illegal immigration—especially when faced with such inaction in Washington. It was encouraging to see their enthusiasm and commitment to taking action to protect American workers and uphold the integrity of the workforce.
