Millions of people were unable to
pay their rent in March or April, and that number will rise as May 1st
approaches and rent is due again. Many of us have been furloughed or
lost our jobs due to the economic and social impacts of Shelter-in
Place (“SIP”) orders necessary to lessen the spread of Coronavirus in
our communities.
The rapid loss of wages and jobs is
leaving tens of millions of people in California and across the
country unable to meet basic needs, like food, rent, utilities, and
childcare. And as many have lost their jobs, they have also lost their
employer-based healthcare in the middle of a global public health
pandemic.
Governor Newsom has wide authority
to pass protections for both renters and mortgage holders now! He has
already helped negotiate a mortgage grace period for some property
owners, but no guarantee of rent relief for California’s 17 million
tenants. While the courts are not processing unlawful detainers during
SIP, it’s not stopping landlords from giving tenants non-payment
eviction notices, harassing already stressed tenants to pay rent, or
pressuring tenants to sign payment plans or new leases that set them
up for eviction once SIP orders are lifted.
We need direct and immediate action
from Governor Newsom. An eviction moratorium is NOT ENOUGH to ensure
tenants can have a #DebtFreeFuture.
Join
us on Monday April 27th at 12:30PM to demand Governor Newsom fight to
Keep Families Housed and Debt Free!
In solidarity,
Christina
