Friend,
Today marks 100 days until election day, November 5, 2024.
Today also marks 295 days since the unfolding genocide in Gaza began .
We always have big plans for presidential election years, but everything changed for us too after October 7. And, like you, we know what it feels like to see the violence of the occupation and the mass ethnic cleansing and killing of Palestinians continue, unabated, with U.S. support. As hard as the mass movement in support of Palestinian liberation has tried, we have failed to stop this carnage which our government supports.
Our government. There is a lot of talk about the threats to our democracy (as there should be) but the disregard for the majority of Americans demanding an immediate, permanent ceasefire and the repression pro-Palestinian voices have been subjected to—those too are very real threats to our democracy. But most do not understand it or frame it this way. We do and this is where you come in, again.
While we know some aspects of our work must change to respond to the challenges of this moment, we also know we must do what we have always done—organize and vote. We never tell you who to vote for, but we work to make sure you are informed, and your civic engagement is supported. Here are three things you need to know.
1. Yalla Vote is ready to go, and more resources will be launching in time for early voting in your area. But we need your help by signing up to be a Yalla Vote volunteer. We need everyone but this is especially the case for Arabic speakers. Please use this link to sign up to help register Arab American voters and help man our Arabic/English Election Protection hotline (844-YALLA-US).
2. Our Palestine events are set for the DNC convention. As we said before, if the parties are not going to address the issue of Palestine, we will bring Palestine to them. Check out the incredible program we are hosting in Chicago at the Rainbow PUSH Coalition headquarters August 19 to August 21. Find more info at www.ProgressivesForPalestine.com. If you will be in Chicago, join us in person and if not, join us virtually.
3. Support an Arab American agenda on Palestine. We know all too well how harmful U.S. policies have been to human rights in the Arab world in general and how much American policies have enabled and supported the occupation. We partnered with leading Arab American organizations to lay out the policy objectives required both at home and abroad to protect Palestinian human rights and the civil rights and liberties of those advocating for them. Please endorse and share it widely.
Listen, I know this is not stopping the carnage in Palestine or what appears to be escalating in Lebanon, but we have to keep building power to demand a government that will better represent us. We will be in touch soon with updates and we remain grateful for your support and partnership.
In solidarity,
Maya
