That country witnessed hundreds of hospitalizations and deaths in 9-16 year-olds, because with viruses like dengue, Zika and coronaviruses, in some individuals a subsequent infection with a different strain of the same virus can increase the risk of severe outcomes—a phenomenon known as “disease enhancement". While the vaccinated children were protected from Diphtheria, Tetanus and Pertussis, they were far more susceptible to other deadly diseases than unvaccinated peers.
