U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky of Evanston, Cook County Commission President Toni Preckwinkle and Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker all issued statements Sunday honoring President Joe Biden’s career and tenure in office, following Biden’s announcement that he will not seek a second term.
However, only Schakowsky, who had previously said she wanted Biden to stay on the ticket, specifically called on Democrats to make Vice President Kamala Harris the party’s presidential nominee.
“It is vital,” Schakowsky said, “that we continue the progress that President Biden began, and Vice President Harris is the woman to get the job done.”
The 9th District member of Congress added that in the wake of Biden’s announcement, “Democrats must come together and stand absolutely unified as a party,” adding “every one of us must rededicate ourselves to defeating Donald Trump with every ounce of energy we have,” because “our very democracy” is at stake.
Commission President Preckwinkle, who on Saturday said she supported Biden staying as the Democratic candidate, said on Sunday that she was “deeply grateful for President Biden’s unwavering and selfless commitment and service to our country,” with an impact that has been “profound, far-reaching, and historic.”
