The Trump administration is punishing Social Security recipients.
While many Americans have started receiving their $1,200 Economic Impact Payments from recent COVID-19 legislation (including some Social Security beneficiaries), there’s a catch. The Treasury Department announced this week that Social Security recipients who do not file an annual tax return and who have one or more children under 17 must take an additional step. And they were given less than 48 hours notice!
Failure to meet the burdensome deadline will cause a delay of the $500 dependent Economic Impact Payment until 2021.
That’s why yesterday, over 13,000 people signed CHN’s petition to Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, demanding this deadline be immediately extended and additional efforts be made by Treasury to reach and inform Social Security, SSDI, SSI, and Veterans’ pension beneficiaries.
We can’t allow Secretary Mnuchin to punish vulnerable Americans in the midst of a pandemic when financial assistance is critical to peoples’ survival.

Treasury is demonstrating its true ignorance of the circumstances of many older Americans, widows or widowers, veterans, and people with disabilities.
Many people who don’t file annual tax returns also don’t have immediate access to the internet. And in the midst of a pandemic, don’t have access to public libraries for their computer and internet needs.
So, a web-only filing system that does not work on most cell phones leaves out entire swaths of the population.
