Friend,
Every four years we’re told that
only the anti-Democratic Party can save us from a far right-wing
Supreme Court.
It’s true that our current Supreme
Court has been carrying out a reactionary, far right agenda, handing
down decision after decision that puts corporations over people and
strips away human rights. One such recent decision was
Grants Pass v.
Johnson, which opened the
door to the widespread criminalization of the unhoused when SCOTUS
ruled that they could be arrested for the very act of sleeping in
public, even without the ability to seek indoor shelter. In other
words, simply being unhoused has been deemed a criminal
offense!
While it’s easy to jump to the
conclusion that the horrors of a Supreme Court with a majority of
Justices hand-picked by right wing Republicans makes the Republican
Party the main culprits in such a disturbing decision, this
dehumanizing treatment of the unhoused has been a bi-partisan
affair.
California has seen a sharp rise in
homeless encampments as the inequities of the economy deepen. Gavin
Newsom, the Governor of California and rising star of the
anti-Democratic Party, provided a friend of the court brief in the
Grants Pass v.
Johnson case, urging the
Supreme Court to grant him the power to sweep homeless encampments
from the streets, as if the real people struggling to survive are
nothing more than trash to be hidden from public sight and tossed in
jail for the crime of poverty!
This week, Governor Newsom took
full advantage of the powers bestowed upon him from the Supreme Court
and ordered a full sweep of homeless encampments, bellowing “No more
excuses!” to city officials in carrying out the cruel dismantling of
the only place so many unhoused people can use as shelter and throwing
them in jail.
Jill Stein believes that housing is
a human right. Under Jill’s administration, she’ll take on the crisis
of housing with a Homes Guarantee, a plan to build 15 million green,
union built public housing units over the next 10 years, and implement
universal rent control to rein in the surging rental costs that are
pricing working people out of the housing market and into the streets.
Jill will make sure people get the help they need to tackle addiction
by ending the destructive war on drugs and taking corporate profit out
of healthcare with Medicare For All.
Friend, can you donate today to give the
voters the choice to vote for a candidate who isn’t beholden to the
billionaire class and will fight for the dignity and protection of all
people?
