What a difference a week makes! Last Saturday, Democrats were deeply divided over whether President Joe Biden should continue his presidential run. The media was publishing stories about Republican unity and their plans to win a landslide election ([link removed]) .

Following Biden’s decision not to run, the world suddenly looks completely different. Democrats have united behind Kamala Harris, fundraising for her campaign is breaking records and the worrisome polls of a few weeks ago are markedly improved.

Most noticeably, the once unified GOP is now showing signs of strain. Trump’s vice presidential nominee, JD Vance, has proved to be an unpopular figure subject to revulsion and ridicule. Their plan to run against Biden is outdated and their effort to attack Harris has fallen flat.

Beneath the big political news, there are other signs that Republicans are in retreat. After filing a spate of voter suppression lawsuits, they are reaping the results in mounting court losses. Their most recent lawsuit in Michigan — targeting veteran voter registration — has been a political headache.

Most importantly, their war against popular ballot initiatives — pro-abortion and pro-democracy — are suffering losses in court. That quiet war is the subject of our must-read articles this week.
