This week, Brady and our partners at the Ad Council and the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) launched a new video public service advertisement (PSA) to raise awareness about Firearm Restraining Orders (FROs), more commonly known as extreme risk laws, in Illinois. This effort, which builds on the first phase of our “Pause to Heal Campaign,” is designed to prevent firearm suicide and other shootings by educating the public about FROs or extreme risk laws. |

Each year in America, over 40,000 people are killed by gun violence. The bulk of these deaths are those we rarely talk about: firearm suicide. In fact, 69 people die by firearm suicide every day and this campaign comes as firearm suicide rates are at an all-time high.
We created our “Pause to Heal” campaign to prevent firearm suicide and stop shootings before they happen by educating residents about Illinois’ FRO law. This law allows family and household members to petition a court to temporarily remove firearms from a person who poses a threat to themselves or those around them. Notably, the U.S. Surgeon General recently called for the implementation of such laws in an advisory that named firearm violence “a public health crisis in America.”
FROs save lives, but only if the public knows how to use them. Research tells us that only 10% of Illinois residents are familiar with FROs. We created this new video PSA to raise awareness about this essential tool that can be used to protect their loved ones. The campaign also acts as a life-saving model for other states to follow, as 21 states and Washington, D.C., have extreme risk laws on the books. Brady Joins Gun Violence Prevention Partners in Endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris for President
A lot has happened in the past three weeks, John. A former president was nearly killed in an assassination attempt and President Joe Biden announced the end of his reelection campaign, passing the torch to the next generation. But one thing that hasn’t changed is our steadfast commitment to supporting gun violence prevention champions who will free America from gun violence. That’s why, this week, the Brady Campaign and our youth-led initiative, Team ENOUGH, joined our partners in the movement to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris for President of the United States. The stakes of this year’s election have never been higher. The difference between electing gun violence prevention champions to the White House and Congress or electing candidates who want to create a country with guns everywhere is a matter of life and death.
Vice President Kamala Harris has played an integral role in the strongest presidential administration ever on gun violence prevention. Thanks to President Biden and Vice President Harris’ leadership, the most comprehensive gun safety bill in three decades was signed into law, the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention was established, a permanent director of the ATF was confirmed for the first time in years, and so much more.

Team ENOUGH was founded in the wake of the 2018 mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland. Its Executive Council is made up of youth leaders who shape Team ENOUGH’s programs, goals, and strategic vision to free America from gun violence.
Members will have the unique opportunity to elevate the voices of young activists — particularly those who are often unheard — through one-of-a-kind programs and platforms, like our Youth Advocacy Training Program.
