President Trump just returned to one of his favorite themes: scapegoating immigrants. Under the pretext of slowing the spread of COVID-19, he ordered border patrol agents to immediately drive immigrants who cross the border without permission—including LGBTQ asylum seekers—back to Mexico.

These policies go against everything our nation stands for. Immigrants make our country stronger and safer. We all benefit from the talent, ingenuity, and courage of the queer, trans, and HIV-positive asylum seekers we serve every day. Last night, President Trump further restricted immigration, targeting people seeking green cards: parents and siblings of U.S. citizens and family members of permanent residents. As has always been the case, separating families serves no legitimate purpose, and the President did so only to rile up his base. But this is nothing new, and we are certain that Mr. Trump will only ramp up attacks on immigrants to deflect from his own appallingly poor leadership.
In times of crisis, we must come together to stand behind the most vulnerable among us. As individuals we can only do so much, but as a community, we have the power to fight back against the President’s horrendous xenophobia. We’ve done it before, and we are ready to do it again.
