MILILANI CONDO AND TOWN HOME INSURANCE TOWN HALL UPDATE
Recently, Representative Matsumoto held a virtual town hall featuring a panel of experts to discuss the increasing concerns about rising condo and town home insurance rates. Here is the latest update on the issue her office was able to find:

On June 28, Governor Green convened a task force to address the property insurance issue in Hawaii and provide the governor with recommendations for both short-term and long-term solutions. The task force includes:
* Speaker Scott Saiki, co-chair
+ Contact info: 808-586-6100, [email protected] (mailto:[email protected])
* Senator Jarrett Keohokalole, co-chair
+ Contact info: 808-587-7215, [email protected] (mailto:[email protected])
* Gordon Ito, Insurance Commissioner, co-chair
+ Contact info: 808-586-2790, [email protected] (mailto:[email protected])
* Gwen Yamamoto Lau, Hawai‘i Green Infrastructure Authority
* Teri Fabry, Hawaii Public Insurance Association
* Victor Brock, Mortgage Bankers Association of Hawaii (MBAH)
* Nancy Donahue-Jones, Hawai‘i Association of Realtors
* Alex McLaury
* Linda Nakamura, MBAH
* Mike Onofrietti, Island Insurance
* Alison Ueoka, Hawaii Insurers Council
* Tammy Teixeira, HEMIC

The task force had two recent meetings in July. One of the proposals being considered is to use the Governor’s executive action to implement the major components of SB3234 ([link removed]) /HB2686 ([link removed]) , which failed to pass the legislature last session. These bills aimed at making condominiums eligible for insurance through the existing state insurance funds such as the Hawaii Hurricane Relief Fund (HHRF) and the Hawaii Property Insurance Association (HPIA). By providing this alternative insurance option, eligible condominiums would no longer have to seek coverage from the secondary market, also known as surplus lines, at a much higher premium.

In response to the devastating fire in Lahaina, Maui in August 2023, members of the Hawaii State House Republican Caucus traveled to the affected community. During their visit, they immersed themselves in the aftermath, gaining insights into the resilience and determination among the locals. By engaging directly with survivors of the Lahaina Wildfire, they asked pressing questions about the adequacy of government response, the effectiveness of communication efforts, and the development of a plan for the future. Now, you can uncover the answers by watching the documentary "After the Fire Lahaina Report".
