Weekly Newsletter: After attending a memorial service for Senator Joe Lieberman, I witnessed firsthand the destructive antisemitism at Union Station. It's time for the commonsense majority to demand accountability and uphold the values of decency and equality.

John,

On Wednesday afternoon, I was running to catch a train back to New York after attending a memorial service in Washington honoring the exceptional life of Senator Joe Lieberman.

This is the picture I took when I arrived at Union Station.

By now, you’ve probably read what happened. Hundreds of “protesters” – ostensibly there to protest Israel’s war against Hamas – instead engaged in an orgy of antisemitism. They spray painted “Hamas is coming” and “All Zionists are bastards” on historic statues. They assaulted a police officer, tore down and burned Americans flags.

It was disgusting, despicable and most elected officials on both sides had the sense and decency to say as much.

But this keeps happening. For months now, our college campuses and public spaces have been overrun by people spewing hatred against Jews, intimidating and bullying bystanders and blatantly breaking laws.

Most haven’t been held accountable. In fact, dozens who ran rampant at Columbia university this past spring – breaking into buildings and threatening janitorial staff and university employees – just had charges against them dismissed.

There are two lessons I think the No Labels community can draw from this.

The first is that this will not stop unless and until the commonsense majority stands up and says enough. In America, you have the right to say whatever you want. But you don’t have the right to assault people, destroy property and break the law. If we keep letting people run rampant with no consequences, we can expect to see more chaos.

The second lesson is that there is a right way and a wrong way to make a point and win hearts and minds. I’d like you to look at this picture from a very different kind of protest.

Here’s what I see: Fellow Americans, demanding that they be treated with the decency and equality promised to them in our Constitution. Instead of trashing our country and burning our flag, they’re waving it with pride and asking their fellow Americans to live up to the ideals we claim to uphold. These are the kinds of civil rights marches No Labels national co-chair Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr. used to organize when he worked for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

A new generation obviously needs to learn some lessons from Dr. Chavis’ experience. Whatever your cause is, I can promise you won’t get closer to achieving it by trying to bully your fellow citizens into submission.

Politics is supposed to be about persuasion. You make your case and hope you can convince more of your fellow Americans to see things your way.

That’s how No Labels is trying to create change. I know we have millions across the country who feel the same way and know we aren’t getting anywhere until we learn once again to talk and listen to one another.

No Labels Exclusive Conversation with Reps. Josh Gottheimer and Don Bacon ([link removed] )

Tuesday, July 30 at 6:30 PM ET

In this heated election season, very few members of either party are willing to speak candidly about the challenges and stakes of this moment. Reps. Josh Gottheimer and Don Bacon are notable exceptions. These two Problem Solvers will be joining us for an exclusive conversation next Tuesday, July 30, at 6:30 PM ET. They will offer their take on what's happening on the campaign trail, in Congress, and which issues they are prioritizing in the months ahead.

Reps. Gottheimer and Bacon are some of the few leaders with the courage to tell it to us straight. We hope you will join us to hear what they have to say about this historic time for America.
