John,
Everyone’s talking about the presidential race and what’s ahead between now and November of this year. We must engage the Democratic base and defeat Trump, and we also have important primary elections coming up very soon.
In Michigan, we have less than two weeks before our state’s primary elections. With absentee voting already underway, every day is Election Day between now and August 6th.
I’m proud to support progressive candidates in my state and across the country. Right now, I want to lift up three women of color who could use our grassroots support. Each is running for Michigan State Representative in different districts, and as part of pushing for a government that truly represents everyday people, they don’t take any money from corporate PACs.
Tonya Myers Phillips is a Black attorney for economic and social justice who protects tenants’ rights in Detroit and across the state. Rima Mohammad is a Palestinian educator, healthcare worker, and School Board member who emigrated to the U.S. as a refugee from Lebanon. Layla Taha is a Lebanese American community organizer who helped enshrine abortion as a right in our state’s constitution.
Please join me in supporting Layla, Tonya, and Rima—three courageous women of color running for Michigan State Representative to help make our government work for everyone, not just the wealthy few.

JOHN,
Too many elected officials are millionaires who can self-finance their own campaigns and don’t understand the urgent struggles that their constituents face. To ensure our government truly represents everyday people, we’re pushing back against Big Money in politics and supporting people-powered candidates who are rooted in their communities.
With about two weeks before Michigan’s Election Day, I want to lift up three progressive Michigan State Representative candidates who are facing tough primary elections. They don’t take any money from corporate PACs, instead relying on grassroots support.
Tonya Myers Phillips is an attorney for economic and social justice who protects tenants’ rights in Detroit and across the state. Rima Mohammad is an educator, healthcare worker, and School Board member who emigrated to the U.S. as a refugee, with parents who are Palestinian refugees. Layla Taha is a public health advocate and community organizer who helped enshrine abortion as a right in our state’s constitution.
Can you split a donation today between progressive candidates Rima, Tonya, and Layla, so they can help make our government work for everyone, not just the wealthy few?
Here’s more about each candidate I’m proud to endorse:
Tonya Myers Phillips has helped hundreds of people save their homes from foreclosure, successfully changed state law to support people at risk of foreclosure, and led a successful campaign to pass the Detroit Right to Counsel Ordinance for people facing eviction. To protect tenants across the state, Tonya helped get a statewide Right to Counsel bill introduced last year. A fierce advocate for criminal justice reform, she also led Detroit's first "Community Court" jail diversion program.
Layla Taha is a public health advocate and community organizer with an organizing background in voting rights and reproductive freedom. When Layla led my team’s constituent services programs and our youth fellowship program, her deep love and commitment to our district’s residents was clear. She’s running for State Representative to make sure lawmakers in Lansing prioritize people over profits. Right now 93% of our state legislators take money from the exploitative utility monopoly DTE, but Layla is pushing to hold DTE accountable and advocating for a publicly owned utility.
Rima Mohammad is running for State Representative to ensure all of our voices are heard in the state capitol. She’s committed to protecting our rights to access quality public education, affordable healthcare, and clean water. Rima is a School Board member and a faculty member of the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy, where she serves as a co-advisor of the Multicultural Pharmacy Student Organization.
With ballots for Michigan’s August 6th primary election already mailed out to voters, every day is Election Day for the next two weeks, so these candidates need our grassroots support now.
Please join me in supporting these three courageous women of color running for Michigan State Representative today.
