John - Sonya Massey should be alive.
The senseless killing of Black people in our country is nothing new. But every time I open my phone it feels like there’s yet another story, yet another name, of a Black person who our police – who have sworn “to serve and protect” – have killed.
The devastation, the grief, it’s real. We need to protect Black people. We need to protect Black women and Black girls. Yet, Sonya Massey was shot in her own home. Her son now without a mother, her mother now without her daughter. The suffering is unimaginable.
The officer has rightfully been charged with murder, and the officer must be convicted. We know far too often that police aren’t held accountable, but I pray the Massey family is given the justice they deserve.
I don’t know how many times we have to say this, but we can’t remain silent.
We need to end qualified immunity.
We need to invest in real solutions to foster safety in our communities.
We need to protect Black people.
