John,
At CREW, we believe that promises made during confirmation hearings mean something. We believe that violating the law and the Supreme Court Code of Conduct should come with consequences. We believe that when justices fall short of their ethics obligations, they undermine the legitimacy of the Supreme Court. And that’s why we believe that Justice Samuel Alito needs to resign.
That’s exactly what we told Alito in a letter earlier this week, and what CREW President Noah Bookbinder explained on MSNBC later that day. Watch him make the case for Alito’s resignation, and if you’re persuaded, make a matched donation to power our Supreme Court ethics work today!
As we said in our letter to Alito:
“The judiciary is supposed to stand as a guardian of the Constitution and protector of the rule of law. But it can only fulfill its constitutional role if the public accepts its legitimacy. Your actions over the past several years, in particular stretching back to the January 6th insurrection, have contributed to the shattering of that legitimacy.”
John, we know we’re not alone in our outrage about Alito’s conduct. In fact, when we emailed earlier this week asking you to co-sign our letter, more than 3,000 of you did.
We really appreciate the support—and we want you to know that this grassroots movement for a more ethical Supreme Court is working. The White House is reportedly preparing to push for a binding ethics code and term limits for the Court. And with 78% of Americans supporting term limits, it’s clear that this is no fringe idea, it’s both mainstream and bipartisan.
As we continue to make the case for Alito’s resignation and meaningful Supreme Court ethics reform, we wanted to pass along some resources for you to share with your friends and family to help spread the word:
Thank you for sharing and supporting our work!
