Hi,
Supreme Court justices like Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito have accepted
substantial, secret gifts from GOP mega-donors and other parties with
interests before the court.
Now, Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Jamie Raskin have
introduced the High Court Gift Ban Act to combat this corruption.^1 This
legislation would make it illegal for Thomas to receive free luxury trips
to Russia from GOP billionaire Harlan Crow and Samuel Alito to receive
vacations from health insurance executives.
This is about the very integrity of our democracy — if Congress doesn’t
reform SCOTUS, the fairness and independence of our courts will be forever
compromised.

The bill would ban loopholes that currently allow justices to accept
substantial gifts. This would align the laws on SCOTUS justices receiving
gifts with the existing rules that apply to members of Congress and other
federal officials. By enforcing stricter ethical standards, the High Court
Gift Ban Act seeks to ensure that judicial decisions are free from undue
influence, thus supporting fair and impartial governance.
Upon introducing the legislation, AOC said, “It is appalling that the
members of the highest court in the land have been accepting millions of
dollars in unreported gifts and transactions from parties with interests
before the court.”^2
Congress must take action to address the rampant ethics scandals on the
Court.
