According to The 19th, “The posts, shared on popular social media platforms, have primarily focused on sexualized and racist narratives about Harris, including claims about her dating history and her eligibility to be president. Disinformation experts who spoke with The 19th said highlighting or linking to more specific disinformation about Harris risks amplifying it.”

These types of attacks linked to sexism, misogyny, and racism are reserved for women who dare to pursue public office – it is impacting our candidates lower down on the ballot and across the country. The Global Project Against Hate and Extremism (GPAHE) found that racism and misogyny targeting VP Harris is so rampant online that hate speech increased by 33% to 50%, respectively, between July 19-21 on the right-wing social media platforms Truth Social and Telegram. Experts warn there may be less comprehensive oversight by tech companies to stop the spread of sexualized disinformation this election cycle.

While men running for office rarely get questioned for their marital status, their children, their relationship history, their appearance, or their bodies, women candidates almost always do. The worst part is that our daughters, wives, sisters, and other women in our lives are watching as some of the most accomplished women of our time get reduced to sexualized memes.
