It has been almost two years since the Equifax data breach that compromised the personal data of more than 143 million Americans. And while this might seem like the distant past to many of us, thousands of individuals are still dealing with the disastrous effects of having their data stolen.

Personal information is more valuable than ever, and in today's information economy, we need to be able to trust that our data will be safe with large credit reporting agencies such as Equifax. And if they fail us, they must face real consequences.

That's why I introduced the Data Breach Prevention and Compensation act along with my colleague Elizabeth Warren. This act defends the rights of consumers through two promises:

1) If your data is stolen, you deserve to be compensated.

2) And if a credit reporting agency failed to protect your data, they deserve to be held accountable.

It's that simple.
